What a surprise I had when I watched the extras of the DIE HARD LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD DVD.

I am fanatic for the first film and also the 4th is already on my top list of movies.

Marilyn Manson, 2007-11-19 Pavilhão Atlantico, Lisboa

What an amazing show. I love it.
It was my 2nd Marilyn Manson live show. The first time I saw them was on the same place in 1998/11/29 With "Moonspell" almost 9 years before. This time was "Turbo Negro" who played before.

Marilyn Manson really rocked playing live, only 80 minutes but really great 80 minutes.

On the "Dope Show" he said: "The drugs they say, are made in Lisbon".

Well. It was an amazing show.

I loved the "Fight Song" with the ring. The "Antichrist Superstar" with the podium. The "The Beautiful People" was the last song and what a show it was. Marilyn Manson jump out of the stage just in my front and I could touch him on his shoulder and back. Very cool, hehe.

Enrique Iglesias, 2007-10-28 Pavilhão Atlantico, Lisboa

Hi people last month I went to see Enrique Iglesias for my 2nd time and it was a great show.
Enrique live is really awsome. He played only 80 minutes. But it was a very funny show.
One time Enrique ask for a portuguese "couple" from the VIP area to go on stage and sit on a sofa with him and the band. It was very cool to see the portuguese guy really drunk and asking the girl to marry him. Of course she said yes.
The first time I saw Enrique Iglesias was at the same Pavillion on the 27th of April 2002. That time he played for 82 minutes but he played more spanish songs on that 2show.

Heroes, 2006-09-25 / 20...

This is one of the best series for me that I ever saw.
I was amazed with the story and got hooked. Now the 2nd series is on, is also awsome.
The 1st series for me was really umbelieveble. The storyline how it will go from episode to episode. It looks like a movie that never end. You always want to se more.

Hairspray (2007)

I saw today the premiere of "Hairspray". And I love it. I love musical-comedies. And this one is going to be on the stories of movies as one of the great musicals of ever, you can count on it.

Nikki Blonsky is really amazing all the movie. Her first movie. And she was a show. I love to see her singing and dancing all over the movie. Being so "large" is amazing what she can do. You have to see it.

John Travolta as her mother was amazing. What a big-large woman, hehe.

Christopher Walken always great. I like to see him dancing, so funny with his arms and legs dancing all around.

James Marsden is amazing as the host of the "Corny Collins Show".

Queen Latifah also always great. What a voice she has!

Plot Summary:

Tracy Turnblad, an overweight teenager with all the right moves, is obsessed with the Corny Collins Show. Every day after school, she and her best friend Penny run home to watch the show and drool over the hot Link Larkin, much to Tracy's mother Edna's dismay. After one of the stars of the show leaves, Corny Collins holds auditions to see who will be the next person on the Corny Collins show. So far I've seen this movie twice and both times the audience was involved 100%. "Hairspray: The Musical" is the definition of a feel good movie.

The storyline has been tweeked a bit from the original film. Whereas the original film had Sonny Bono's Franklin Von Tussle as the main antagonist, this one has Velma Von Tussle (Michelle Phieffer) as the head adversary; now seen as the station manager for the TV station airing The Corny Collins Show. Velma's goal is to ensure that her daughter, Amber stays Miss Hairspray in the face of the rising success of Tracy Turnblad (played wonderfully by Nikki Blonsky).

The musical numbers are fantastic, and while there's less of an emphasis on the dancing which was a big part of the original film, it doesn't detract from the wonder of the musical sequences.

Other differences is the take on the individual characters. Whereas Ricki Lake's Tracy was brash and confident, Blonsky's Tracy is more subdued. John Travolta, as Edna gives the character the sensitivity that wasn't evident in Divine's portrayal.

Although still done in connection with John Waters, it does lack Waters edginess, making an already mainstream Waters film even more mainstream for family audiences. However, the cast and the direction more than makes up for this.

Why the best ones are the first to go???

Why people?
I just knew today that a friend had died yesterday.
I didn't spoke to her since last year. But she always was on my heart. She was a very close friend, she was a wife, a mother and an amazing woman.
Some years ago she had cancer and she recovered on the last years. But this year the things got worst and she couldn't resist. Yesterday was the day that she could not fight anymore.
I will always remember the day I met her in a Duran Duran live show here in Lisbon. I will never forget some days after the Lisbon show to have been with her and another great friend in Birmingham to see Duran Duran again.
She was a Duranie and a great Bon Jovi fan also.
I met her daughter and her husband and they are amazing.
She was one of a kind. I think I never met no one who was so friendly, so kind to others as her.
I will always miss you. Only some photos to remember you.

The witching hour is almost here. Thousands of would-be warlocks, sorcerers and ordinary, non-magical Muggles lined up outside bookstores from Sydney to Seattle on Friday, eager to get their hands on "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," the seventh and final volume in the boy wizard's saga.

In a now-familiar ritual that is part sales frenzy and part Halloween party, bookstores across Britain were flinging open their doors at a minute past midnight Saturday. Shops as far afield as Singapore and Australia were putting the book on sale at the same time; the United States was to follow from midnight EDT.

Harry's creator, J.K. Rowling, was giving a midnight reading to 500 competition-winning children in the grand Victorian surroundings of London's Natural History Museum.

For many, the place to be was Waterstone's bookstore on Piccadilly in central London, a traditional hub of Pottermania.

An assortment of wizards, witches and at least one house elf, from as far afield as Finland and the United States, staked out their places on the sidewalk hours — in some cases days — before the midnight opening.

Some passed the time by jotting predictions for the final novel in notebooks, while others encouraged passing drivers to "Honk for Harry."

"This is the biggest Harry Potter party in Europe, so it's worth the wait," said Laura Halinen, 23, from Kuusankoski, Finland.

"Deathly Hallows" is the last book in a series that began a decade ago with "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone," the story of an orphaned boy who learns on his 11th birthday that he is a wizard. Since then, Rowling's books have sold 325 million copies in 64 languages, and the launch of each new volume has become a Hollywood-scale extravaganza.

Chellie Carr, 17 — a fan since the age of 9 — said she had pestered her mother to bring her to London from her hometown of Okemos, Mich.

"For all the other books she said, 'No. It's just a book.' But for this one, she said yes," said Carr, who wore a homemade black cloak lined in green for Slytherin, one of four houses at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

"Deathly Hallows" has a print run of 12 million in the United States alone, and Internet retailer Amazon says it has taken 2.2 million orders for the book — 47 percent higher than the pre-order for "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince." Britain's Royal Mail says it will deliver 600,000 copies on Saturday — one for every 43 households in the country.

Security has been tight, with books shipped in sealed pallets and legal contracts binding stores not to sell the book before the midnight release time.

Nonetheless, spoilers have sprouted on the Internet, including photographed images of what appeared to be all 700-plus pages of the book's U.S. edition. Publishers would not say whether the leaked pages were genuine. Bloomsbury, the book's British imprint, said only that they were "unauthenticated."

In France, the daily Le Parisien played spoiler, telling readers how the final installment ends, in a small article which it printed upside down. "Upend this page if you want to know the end!" ran the headline, printed the right way up.

As many as 1,200 copies were shipped early in the U.S. by an online retailer, and two U.S. newspapers published reviews of the book ahead of the release.

Rowling said she was "staggered" by the embargo-busting reviews.

"I'd like to ask everyone who calls themselves a Potter fan to help preserve the secrecy of the plot for all those who are looking forward to reading the book at the same time on publication day," she wrote on her Web site. "In a very short time you will know EVERYTHING."

The six books have been building to a final confrontation between Harry and his evil nemesis, Lord Voldemort, scourge of the wizarding world. Fans are on tenterhooks because of the prophecy, revealed in book five, that one must inevitably kill the other.

Bookmakers said they had taken bets on a wide range of theories — from Harry committing suicide to Hogwarts headmaster Dumbledore, murdered in book six, turning out to be alive.

"It's the only novel we've ever bet on, which shows what a phenomenon it really is," said Rupert Adams of bookmakers William Hill. "We just don't get that sort of speculation over a book."

Many fans were planning to turn off their computers and disconnect their phones in order to read the book in spoiler-free peace. And then, it will be all over.

Amber de Jager, 19, from Rijswijk in the Netherlands, said she expected "relief, but a lot of tears as well."

"I think it will have a bittersweet ending," she said.

Live Earth, 2007-07-07

Well. As you probably know on the 7th of July of 2007 it happened the 24 hours Live Earth.
It was an amazing show that was held all over the world in about 10000 different places. This Live Earth was made by Kevin Wall, Al Gore and the Alliance for Climate Protection to try to make people know (if they don't know already) how to save our planet not only to our future generations but to our generation.

For me the best bands was in New Jersey, NY Bon Jovi, in London Madonna, in Tokyo Linkin Park, in Sydney Crowded House and in Hamburg Shakira.

I didn't see Metallica, Snow Patrol, The Police, Foo Fighters, Roger Waters, Duran Duran, Fall Out Boy, AFI, David Gray. I also loved Kelly Clarkson in NJ, Genesis in London, Sarah Brightman in China, Enrique Iglesias in Germany, Black Eyed Peas in London.

It was a huge success. The show was seen for more than 2 billion people all over the world. The main shows were in New York, London, Johannesburg, Rio de Janeiro, Shanghai, Tokyo, Sydney, Hamburg and many other places.

LOST HIGHWAY also debuted #1 on Billboard’s Rock Albums chart, Billboard’s European Top 100 chart, in Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Holland, Austria, Thailand and Japan where Bon Jovi’s #1 chart debut gave them their 4th #1 career album – breaking the record which they shared with the Beatles, of three #1’s.

The program features six live song videos – the new single, “(You Want To) Make A Memory,” the album title track, “Lost Highway,” “Wanted Dead Or Alive,” “Hallelujah,” “Whole Lot Of Leavin’,” and “Who Says You Can’t Go Home” – plus an exclusive interview.

The 602 stations – representing an on-air audience of 40 million across the Mainstream Rock, Classic Rock, Hot AC, Country, and News/Talk/Sports formats – marked an all-time record number of participating stations for a Clear Channel Stripped promotion. More than 1.1 million homepage impressions were logged altogether in the first 48 hours.

That same Tuesday morning, NBC’s Today Show announced that Bon Jovi drew the biggest outdoor audience in the show’s history, for the band’s live 4-song performance outside on the Plaza. Two things you immediately notice about Chris Benoit: 1) he’s a man of few words, and 2) he’s one of the greatest technical wrestlers alive. Family and friends have always described him as “quiet” and “soft-spoken,” but his fellow WWE Superstars know better; they know that once Benoit steps inside the ring, he turns into the Rabid Wolverine, whose bite is infinitely worse than any bark.

“Wrestling has consumed my life,” he says. “It’s my mistress, my passion. It defines a lot of who I am as a person.”

It’s somehow fitting that this decorated WWE titleholder began defining himself in Edmonton, the Alberta-based “City of Champions,” as a 12-year-old attending his first live wrestling event at the Old Pavilion. He says that from the moment he saw the Dynamite Kid in ring action, “I wanted to be just like him.” When he wasn’t at home lifting the weights his parents gave him one Christmas, he was training on the football field or in the gym of Archbishop O’Leary High School (where his teachers would occasionally have to remind him to come to class). Or he was traveling with friends to wrestling venues throughout Edmonton and Calgary, becoming regular fixtures to the point where they often helped set up the ring and chairs.

Upon graduating high school, Benoit’s wrestling education ranged from months of torturous training in the renown Calgary “Dungeon” of the legendary Stu Hart, to years in New Japan Pro-Wrestling, where he’d meet best friends Dean Malenko (now a WWE producer) and the late Eddie Guerrero. Benoit’s toothless smile grows whenever he remembers meeting Eddie during New Japan’s Super J Cup Tournament Semifinals—and knocking him out with an enzugiri kick to the head. “That was the beginning of our friendship,” he laughs.

Despite his well-earned reputation for “toothless aggression,” the Rabid Wolverine is a paradox of sorts. He confesses to feeling “freaked out” after breaking Sabu’s neck at ECW’s November 2 Remember in 1994, and hearing then-ECW owner Paul Heyman refer to him as “The Crippler.” He recalls celebrating in the ring with “Stone Cold” Steve Austin almost more than his unlikely win at the 2004 Royal Rumble. (“For the first time in my life,” he admits, “I actually drank a whole beer.”) And it’s hard to believe that someone who made Triple H tap out to win the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania XX was originally “very nervous” about joining World Wrestling Entertainment four years earlier. “If you were ever going to make a name for yourself in this industry,” he explains, “WWE was the place to be.”

Chris Benoit has certainly made a name for himself here, and continues to do with every match. As for his missing front tooth, the Rabid Wolverine lost it while play-wrestling with his pet Rottweiler; the dog’s head collided with his chin, causing the tooth to pop out. If the Rottweiler was smart, he didn’t seek a rematch.

Benoit's death part of a double murder-suicide

According to lead investigator Lt. Tommy Pope, of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department, in Fayetteville, Ga., the deaths of WWE Superstar Chris Benoit, wife Nancy and son Daniel were the result of a double murder-suicide, WWE.com has learned.

Benoit failed to appear both at Saturday’s live event in Beaumont, Tx., and WWE’s Vengeance: Night of Champions in Houston Sunday night, after informing WWE of a family emergency. Several curious text messages sent by Benoit early Sunday morning prompted concerned friends to alert Richard Hering, VP of Government Relations for WWE, Inc. Hering, in turn, spoke with Fayette County sheriffs Monday, and requested that they respond to the Benoit residence to check on him and his family.

Authorities representing the Sheriff’s Department initially had a difficult time entering Benoit’s new Fayetteville home Monday afternoon, which had been guarded by two large German Shepherds roaming freely around the property. Once authorities entered the residence, they quickly located the bodies of Benoit, Nancy and Daniel. WWE was notified of the discovery at approximately 4 p.m.

At 10 p.m. Monday night, Lt. Pope held a press conference in conjunction with Scott Ballard, the district attorney for Fayette County. The press conference officially ruled authorities’ findings as a double murder-suicide from within the home.

WAGA, a FOX-owned and operated television station in Atlanta, reported that investigators believe Benoit killed his wife and 7-year-old son over the weekend, then himself on Monday.

The three bodies have been received by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s crime lab, in Decatur, Ga., where autopsies will be performed Tuesday morning. Toxicology reports will not become available for at least two weeks.

WWE.com has further information relating to both the investigation and the cause of death, but the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department has requested that WWE.com not release any additional details at this time.

Yesterday, the 24th Of June 2007 I was in London to see Bon Jovi playing live at the new O2 Arena. It was an amazing show that sold out on the day the tickets went to sale. I stayed on: BK106, Row V, Seat 188, Entrance H. I only made it to buy the ticket last Thursday, the 21th of June. I was so happy to go to that show. The only show in Europe this year.

Last night’s stunt with Vince McMahon being blown up in the limousine was actually filmed Sunday evening. WWE brought in an outside stunt company to come in and set the entire thing up. The stunt was planned over the last two weeks, with WWE having to obtain a few permits.

When McMahon walked outside and got in the limo last night, it was live but they spliced the cable to show the taped footage. For fans coming out of the arena last night they had the burnt limo husk from the one used in the stunt on display.

WWE.com is going along with the storyline that forensic experts are examining the limo for the remains of Mr. McMahon’s body.

Mr. McMahon is NOT DEAD. Here's exactly what happened:

This was a stunt. When someone is about to do an extreme stunt, don't you think they'd be a little nervous and hesitate? Thats exactly what McMahon did. He walked around for a while. When he opened the car door and he finally sat down and FINALLY put his leg in the car (this is the hilarious part) "his leg" comes back out of the car. It WASN'T HIS LEG!! IT WAS A FAKE LEG WITH THE SAME KIND OF SHOE AND PANTS.

Once he got into the car he was already out of it. All he did was, well...my guess...is kinda close the door so viewers couldn't see, put the "leg" out and pull like a string to close the door. Vince was out of the car when he pulled the string. He is 100% safe and I'm sure that he'll be back soon. He can't hide forever. His time just isn't now =) (like John Cena...just had to add that)

WWE.com received word that the lead federal investigator in the Mr. McMahon limousine-explosion case will release a statement Thursday to bring the media up to speed on the investigation and its progress.

Mr. McMahon is presumed dead after his limo exploded outside the Wachovia Arena in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Monday night after Raw. McMahon was seen on live television entering the vehicle moments before the explosion consumed the car. No body has been recovered yet from the burned-out vehicle.

Investigators combed Mr. McMahon’s private office at WWE headquarters early Wednesday, searching for any clues or information that would aid in the case. They took many boxes of evidence from the building, as well as McMahon’s personal computer. The site of Monday’s explosion is still cordoned off by investigators as a crime scene.

For years Mr. McMahon’s bravado, coupled with his constant harassment of Superstars, created a major rift with our fans. But after the horrendous limo explosion on Raw, our fans have shown that regardless of his past transgressions, they still care about the man who vaulted sports-entertainment to where it is today.

In fact, the Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Police Department has been inundated with well-wishers in the wake of the McMahon tragedy, and Detective Lieutenant Will Clark told WWE.com he has never seen the station busier.

“We have never in our time seen this amount of calls,” he said, “hands down this is the most ever.” Lt. Clark continued, “I would say the amount of attention we are getting is second to none.”

And just what are people looking for when they call the Wilkes-Barre Police Department? “Everyone is wondering about the progress of the investigation,” said Lt. Clark. He then told WWE.com that the department itself has concerns because of the influx of calls they have taken. “We have had to utilize more manpower and resources than ever before because of the volume of calls through our station and the local 911 center.”

Such an outpouring from our fans around the world for Mr. McMahon shows that despite all his antics in the past, and although he made it his business to step on a few people on his way to the top, The Chairman might actually still have a place in the hearts of each and every fan.

Perhaps this response was foreshadowed by WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes, who was in Wilkes-Barre Monday night as part of Mr. McMahon appreciation night. Rhodes’ words still eerily resonate with anyone who saw Raw or has followed this breaking news all week. “Mr. McMahon’s legacy is in this building,” Rhodes said. “You don’t have to love him, you do not have to like him, you do not even have to agree with his psychology of this industry; one thing we all have to do is respect him.”

Based on what WWE.com was told by Lt. Clark, our fans seem to agree with the American Dream.

Love him or loathe him, the respect being shown by each and every fan in the wake of this tragedy shows that no matter how underhanded and mean-spirited Mr. McMahon has been over the years, he still will always be respected.

A morning of mourning for Mr. McMahon

STAMFORD, Conn. – After Monday’s horrific events on Raw, those “dark clouds” the Chairman once spoke of are now felt prominently in the halls and offices of WWE headquarters.

With Mr. McMahon presumed dead, the corporate flag on the roof of Titan Tower was lowered to half-staff Tuesday morning. The company McMahon built into a sports-entertainment giant began to mourn the passing of its leader and visionary.

Many WWE staffers are still suffering from the trauma of seeing their corporate leader’s limousine explode on live television just after Mr. McMahon entered it.

“I sat there stunned, not believing what I just saw,” said marketing employee Stefanie Granata. “Then I just cried. You just don’t realize how precious life is until something like this happens.”

Though federal officials at the scene have not recovered his body from the charred chassis of the limo, investigators believe that Mr. McMahon’s body could possibly have been incinerated in the blast.

Some WWE employees wore black clothing to express their sadness. Others have left flowers by the Chairman’s office door. And if you listen closely, faint sobbing can be overheard occasionally amongst the din of the phones, fax machines and printers.

Heather Lubin, a long-time marketing employee, said the loss is being felt hard around the Stamford offices – mostly because of the unexpected, unexplained nature of the tragedy.

“It’s hard to cope with this tragedy when there’s so many questions unanswered,” Lubin said. “Who could do such a thing to Mr. McMahon?”

As for Liz Montgomery, a WWE creative services employee, she hopes that everyone can come together and help each other cope with the shocking loss of the company’s heart and soul.

“He’ll be truly, truly missed,” Montgomery said. “Wherever he is now, I hope it’s in a good place. But we’re going to miss him terribly.”

Last Saturday, the 12th of May 2007, George Michael played in Portugal for the first time ever. The show was in "Estadio Cidade de Coimbra" in Coimbra to 28.000 people.

It was an amazing show. George Michael in the 80's, from 1982 till 1986 was in "Wham!" with Andrew Ridgley my favourite band of that time. I am following his carreer since 1982. After "Wham!" George Michael went solo.

Shakira, 2007-04-04, Pavilhão Atlântico, Lisbon

I saw this month for the 3rd time Shakira live here in Lisbon and always on the "Pavilhão Atlântico".

I saw her in 2003, 2005 on the EMAs of MTV and now again in 2007. On the 2005 EMAs of MTV she only played one song: "Don't Bother".

This was the best show of Shakira I saw. She was really amazing. Sing many amazing songs with the old spanish ones and the new english and spanish ones. She played for 95 minutes.

I arrived at the Pavillion at 7h15 a.m. on that day and there were already fans in there. 3 girls were there since Monday and another boy since tuesday. The show was on a wednesday.

It was a very cool day. I appeard on a video of "sapo.pt".

When I went to the pavillion I stayed on first row on the middle. Very nice spot to see all the show and to take many amazing photos.

And when she was doing the Band Introdution, she didnt knew how to say "bass" in portuguese, so she said "E agora no baixo (and now in the bass)", and looked to us, like asking "Did i said it right?" and we afirmed with the head. But than she repeated and said "Então no bajo", and we yelled "BAIXO", and she asked "Baixo? ok", and than she said "Então, no bajo John Button (so, in the bass John Button)", and we were all like "DUHHHH".

In portuguese almost perfect, Shakira thank the presence of everyone and told her first little love story, when she with 4 years old fall in love with a boy of 5, her parents didn't like that idea. After that small story Shakira sang "Illegal"

One time in the middle of the show Shakira ask everyone to sing: "Parabéns a você" (Happy Birthday) (in portuguese) to one of the band guitarrists: Tim Mitchell. "A alma do grupo" like Shakira said. He is going to have a b-day on the day after the show. 5th of April.

PS2: By the way I received a "pick" (palheta in portuguese) from Tim Mitchell after the show. With his sign name and Shakira written on top. Very cool.

WT, 2007-03-24, Paradise Garage, Lisbon

Last Saturday I was in one of the most amazing live shows I ever was.
It was my first show of one of my favourite bands, Within Temptation.
The place: Paradise Garage in Lisbon, Portugal. 800 people sold out the place.
During the afternoon I was with all the members of the band twice, near 13h and near 15h. Only Robert I couldn't see. I have photos with all and autographs with all (not with Robert).
At 13h more or less I gave Sharon a kiss. Ir was really awsome. She was very friendly and all the other members of the band also.
I never saw a band who did what WT did like this. They talk with us, take photos with us and gave autographs many times without being boring.
I will never forget.
I already knew they were like this with fans because in the dvds we can see how they are.
Inside the Paradise Garage almost the time to begin. WT appeard at 21h18 and started with an amazing show, "Our Solemn Hour" it was the beginning. The fans started to sing all the songs they were playing.
After WT ended a song during the concert I show Sharon the portuguese flag and she stretch her right hand and I throw the flag to her. Sharon used the flag around her and everybody started to scream for Portugal.
They rest for 2 minutes before playing the encore. And finish with "Ice Queen". the show ended at 22h58.
At the end of the show when she and all the members of the band thank the audience she was with the flag again. Very cool.
I have some cool photos of me with the members of WT and I also have some photos of them playing live in the Paradise Garage.

I have at least 180 photos but only 70 are more or less good. In the new post of photos I will add the best ones.
What an amazing show it was. I hope to see WT again real soon. Within Temptation already told that they will come here again to a bigger show at Summer, Outumn, or Winter time.

British pop sensation enjoys relative anonymity in States.


HOLLYWOOD — When you're Robbie Williams, this is how the dating scene in Los Angeles works: You meet a girl, she blows you off, then she looks up your name on the Internet search engine Google, finds out you're one of the richest pop stars in the world, and voila! You get lucky.

"I bump into these girls and they are like really not interested," the British singer explained with his famously wry smile, dressed in a T-shirt and warm-up pants and walking his dogs through the hills overlooking his adopted city. "The next time I see them, they are like, 'Hey, nice to meet you, Robbie!' So I've been told, 'That girl "googled" you, because she knows who you are now.' Hurray for 'googling'! Science got me laid.

"I got laid twice because they thought I was Robin Williams, which is kind of cool," he added.

Robbie's Hollywood dating situation — joke or not — is quite indicative of the current phase of his musical career. An Internet search for his name generates close to half a million pages, yet most Americans are largely unfamiliar with the charismatic breakout star from British boy band Take That!. In 1999, "Millennium," from The Ego Has Landed compilation drawn from his first two overseas albums, was moderately successful in the U.S. And of course there was "Rock DJ," an oddball dance number that the eclectic singer now says he hates, though he likes the video, in which he rips off his skin and tosses it out to adoring female fans. But compared to the Justins and Snoop Doggs, he's still obscure on this side of the pond.

Late last year, Williams signed the biggest British record deal in history, reportedly worth over $100 million, shortly after recording his latest album, Escapology. EMI is hoping this album will finally break him in the U.S. Though he owns a house in Los Angeles and has written several songs about the town, Williams says he isn't dying to make it in the States, and in fact, insisted he's enjoying the relative anonymity.

"I'm very pleased to say I've got a successful career everywhere else," he said. "And this is a massive country. It involves a lot of work. And it involves a lot of ass-kissing as well, and touring for years. I used to work very hard and it made me very ill. And I refuse to work that hard again. So, if [success] happens here by doing very little, then great. But if it doesn't, it's cool.

"I want to sell a few hundred thousand albums here," he added. "And I'll be happy with that."

Featuring a somewhat different track list than its imported counterpart, the domestic version of Escapology fully encapsulates the strengths Williams has developed over the years: a silky smooth and versatile voice, finely honed Britpop sensibilities, swinging bluster, driving power, the occasional veer into starkly emotional territory ("Nan's Song" is about his late grandmother), inventive storytelling ("Me and My Monkey"), emotional self-analysis (most evident in the album's first single, "Feel") and of course, a self-deprecating wit.

"I'm just getting started musically," he said thoughtfully. "I think I'm just finding myself. I can see from this album where I want to go and what I want to sound like. I think the pressure's on the record company. So, all I got to do is deliver [good albums], and I've done that before. And I'm getting better at it each album.

"And plus, if [Escapology] bombs, what the hey," he said with a laugh. "I'm in the hills. I've got my dogs. I've got the life, you know?"

In the next few weeks we'll be turning the spotlight on The Joshua Tree, celebrating the twentieth anniversary of its release.

First up, here' s what they were saying about the album, just after it was finished - long before anyone realised just how successful it was to be.

The release of The Joshua Tree saw U2 become 'Rock's Hottest Ticket.' In Sweden, copies of The Joshua Tree were pressed in yellow, pink and red vinyl with sleeves similar to the UK. The pink vinyl copies are the most common of the three. In Mexico, a limited edition CD was released as part of the Serie Millennium re-issues with a different picture sleeve. As recently as 1999, The Joshua Tree CD was re-issued with the clear band photo that appeared on the original vinyl LP rather than the blurred picture on the initial CD release.
U2's biggest selling album to date entered the US album charts at No.7 and reached No. 1 three weeks later. It was U2's first album to reach No.1 in the United States. In 1999, The Joshua Tree was awarded the RIAA's highest certification, Diamond, with 10 million units sold. The album also peaked at No.1 on the UK, Canadian, West German, Dutch and Australian charts. In Switzerland, the album reached No.1 on the charts and stayed there for a total of 33 weeks. The album and sleeve cover also placed No. 1 in Rolling Stone magazine's annual Music Awards chosen by readers. Critics at Rolling Stone made it No. 2 album of the year. U2 also won Best Rock Performance By A Group Or Duo at the Grammy Awards for The Joshua Tree.

Within Temptation - Biography Within Temptation got founded in 1996. Robert Westerholt, who had already found a singer (his girlfriend Sharon den Adel), started the band. In less than two months, they had been offered various contracts for a record deal. WT decided to sign with DSFA Records and things got started.

After signing to DSFA, things got rolling. The first album, "Enter", was released in April 1997 and soon after that, WT already played Dynamo 1997. It was their fifth gig ever... After playing on Dynamo they got asked for quite a lot of other gigs and at the end of 1997 (November) they even did a two-week tour through Germany and Austria. Some other pretty big gigs followed, including Noorderslag. And Dynamo 1998 of course, where WT played the main stage, after playing the campsite in 1997. Around the time that they played this gig at Dynamo, they also released an EP called "The Dance". This was supposed to serve as a small treat to span the gap between Enter and a new record.

In 1999 WT decided to take things slow. After two years of performing and far too less breaks, they needed some time for themselves. So nothing really exciting happened except they finished their studies and their own studio became reality.

2000 turned out to be the year of major changes. The band received invitations to play at the major festivals in the Benelux countries. In December of this year the cd Mother Earth was released. Many Dutch professional music magazines voted this cd as their cd-of-the-month. Various album charts were topped and the number of fans increased heavily.
In 2001 Within Temptation did a lot of touring, both inside- and outside of The Netherlands. Besides a club tour of 40 ‘sold-out’ concert halls, many festivals concerts were done. One of the highlights was a concert at the famous Pinkpop festival (100.000 visitors). Also concerts in Paris, Mexico-City and at Belgium Festivals were given. 2 cd-singles were released, Our Farewell and Ice Queen. 2002 became the year of the mass-breakthrough. The single Ice Queen reached the number 1 position in may charts, both in The Netherlands and in Belgium. The Album Mother Earth reached the Platinum status in The Netherlands and the Gold status in Belgium. In both countries TMF/MTV Awards were achieved. The band played at the major Festivals in the Benelux (Ozzfest, Lowlands, Dynamo, Rock Werchter, Pukkelpop, Parkpop), as well as in Germany (Rock im Park, Bizarre, Summerbreeze). In France Within Temptation toured the major cities (Paris, Lyon, Lille, Bordeaux, Toulon) with sold-out venues. Besides Robert Westerholt (guitar) and Sharon den Adel (singer), Within Temptation consists of: Jeroen van Veen (bass guitar), Martijn Spierenburg (keyboards), Stephen van Haestregt (drums) and Ruud Jolie (guitar).

Is it just me, or is U2's new video (see below) downright offensive?

It's one thing to use footage of artists such as Jay-Z, the White Stripes, Elvis Costello, Flavor Flav, Morrissey, et al. They're all alive and can consent to such a use of their images. But the use of dead icons smacks of exploitation, and the assumption that the likes of Kurt Cobain, Frank Zappa, Joe Strummer, Bob Marley, Elvis Presley, and Frank Sinatra would agree to appear in a U2 video... well, that's just hubris. Maybe they'd agree to it, and maybe they wouldn't, but they obviously had no choice in the matter.

Well, I guess Bono himself sums it up best in the song's lyrics: "I've got no shame."
