David Bowie, the highly influential singer, songwriter, actor, producer and artist, died on Sunday at the age of 69 after a bout with cancer his publicist and family confirmed early this morning.

Bowie’s son, Duncan Jones, director of Moon and the upcoming Warcraft, was with his father as he died and posted this shortly thereafter on Twitter.

Very sorry and sad to say it's true. I'll be offline for a while. Love to all.

Bowie had just released his latest album Blackstar, his first after 10 years, last week when he also celebrated his 69th birthday.

Beyond his obvious contributions to the world of rock music where his style and androgynous persona was highly influential for multiple generations of musicians and artists, Bowie was also a prolific actor, starring in the science fiction film The Man Who Fell to Earth in 1973 and later taking memorable roles in Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ and Jim Henson’s Labyrinth. He was offered, but declined, to star as the Bond villain in 1985's A View to a Kill (the role instead went to Christopher Walken). More recently, Bowie starred alongside Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale in Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige and made a cameo as himself in the original Zoolander.

Bowie’s musical hits included “Space Oddity,” “Changes,” “Heroes,” “Ziggy Stardust” and even the number one pop music hit “Let’s Dance” in the 80s.

Born David Robert Jones on Jan. 8, 1947, Bowie is survived by his wife, model Iman, their daughter Alexandria Zahra Jones, and Bowie’s son from a previous relationship, Duncan Jones.

Bowie last performed live in 2006, but his legacy in both music, film, fashion and culture will always live on.
